If you live and/or work north of Madison Street, south of Chicago Avenue, east of the Chicago River, and west of Lake Michigan, this website is for you especially. In terms of zip codes, we serve 60601 (north side of Loop), 60603 (central Loop), 60606 (west side of Loop), 60611 (northeast of Loop), and 60654 (northwest of Loop).

Loop North is for stakeholders, people who live and/or work in downtown Chicago. You are busy, not easily impressed, and we are not going to waste a second of your time.

News. We cover news of interest to people who live and/or work in downtown Chicago, especially subjects that are under-served by other news outlets. Our reporters and writers each have decades of professional experience.

Loop North News was a winner of Chicago Headline Club’s Peter Lisagor Award for Exemplary Journalism in the category of Best Neighborhood / Community News Website in 2018 and 2019, and was a finalist in 2014 and 2017.

Building Permits. See at a glance where all the new downtown construction projects are. Search thousands of records by selecting a specific street address, specific building, or by clicking on a location on a map. Get permit number, type (e.g., renovation/alteration), location (street address and building name), description, estimated cost, permit fee, and date issued. For each contractor – name, type (e.g., architect), address, telephone number. Also, display on a map permits issued in the past year for projects with the highest estimated cost. Permit data updated daily from Department of Buildings. Subscribe to a free email alert whenever new information on building permits is available.

Business Licenses. Summaries of licenses recently issued by Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection for locations in the 42nd Ward. License number, legal name, DBA name, location (with link to address displayed on a map), description, date issued, expiration date, and current license status. Select a specific business by its street address. Or click to see just licenses issued to new restaurants and bars. Updated daily.

Chicago Stocks. Most recent stock prices of publicly-owned companies headquartered in downtown Chicago. The Loop/North index is the average price of these stocks.

Chicago Water Taxi. During the Chicago Water Taxi season, the next four departures to destinations along the Chicago River. Mobile or desktop. Updated every five minutes.

Divvy Bicycle Stations. Location and current number of bicycles available at Divvy stations in downtown Chicago. Updated every 10 minutes from data obtained from divvybikes.com.

Downtown Chicago Crime Report Downtown Chicago Crime Report provides access to Chicago Police Department crime incident reports for the Loop and five other neighborhoods – Fulton River District, Gold Coast, New East Side, River North, and Streeterville.

At a glance, see what crimes have been reported most recently, where and when they happened, whether there was an arrest, and case numbers. Search by block, date, or crime. Click Neighborhood to widen the search by a few blocks. Click the Trend button for an analysis of the selected crime on the selected block – number of incidents reported, percentage of incidents in which there was an arrest, and locations at which the crime was reported the most. Click Analyze Block to see how the selected block compares with the rest of downtown Chicago.

Filming Locations Filming Locations. Unless you want to dig around on the city’s website, Loop North is the only source of information on active filming permits issued by the City of Chicago.

See the project name and description, permit number and date issued, location address and dates project will be shooting there, and street closings (if any). Scroll through a list, updated daily, or see locations displayed on a map. Check in from any device – or subscribe to email alerts whenever information on new filming permits is available.

MLS listings of units for sale and units for rent. Quickly search through more than 2,000 listings, updated every six hours, of condo units in the Loop, Near North, or Near West neighborhoods – or select a building from a list and see all available units there. Sort by price, low-to-high or high-to-low, or location – south-to-north or east-to-west. Click to see only new listings or check out the most expensive homes for sale or rent.

In addition to the usual photos and info that everyone else has, we show the price per square foot, any recent price changes, recent sales, days on market, nearest CTA stations, grocery store, restaurants, nearby construction projects, and a walk score assigned by urban planners and other experts to rate how walk-able the neighborhood is.

Restaurant Health Inspections Restaurant Health Inspections. Put down that noodle until you’ve checked out the restaurant’s health inspection results on Loop North.

See at a glance where the most recent inspections took place, including restaurants that failed their inspection. Scroll through recent inspections, recent failed inspections, or select from more than 1,000 restaurants currently in our database. Get the restaurant name, address (with link to Google Maps), inspection type, result, and date. Data is refreshed daily from the City of Chicago’s Department of Public Health.

This update includes headlines and links to stories from Loop North News, closing stock prices of companies with headquarters in the Loop and on the north side, a tip on an upcoming neighborhood event, and the AccuWeather forecast for downtown Chicago for the rest of the day and tomorrow.

Once a week, an update is emailed to a large list of people local and nationwide, providing a summary of stories covered during the previous week.
