March 5, 2015 – Fire department personnel rescued a woman who jumped into the Chicago River early Wednesday evening.

The woman jumped from the middle of the Wabash Avenue Bridge on the east side. A witness saw a coat, boots, and purse piled on a steel divider between the sidewalk and roadway.

A police officer saw the woman in the water and called in the rescue at 5:51 p.m. Six minutes later, scuba divers swam out from the north bank near Trump International Hotel & Tower and pulled the woman, who was conscious, back to shore. She was taken by ambulance to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

It was the start of a cold night in downtown Chicago. The high temperature on Wednesday was 19 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
