November 12, 2012 – (Above) Mayor Rahm Emanuel addresses a small crowd gathered Saturday morning at the Veterans Memorial Plaza on the Riverwalk near State Street.

Emanuel took the opportunity to announce that Chicago is the first city to partner with a U.S. Department of Defense program that will help honor Vietnam War veterans. The U.S. Vietnam War Commemoration was founded in 2008 to thank and honor veterans, contributions by people on the home front, and highlight the service of the armed forces during the war.

“At a time when we need to bind our nation together and strengthen its foundations, the spirit and service of our veterans is essential to our country’s success,” said Emanuel. “On behalf of a grateful city and a grateful country, we honor their commitment and sacrifice.”
