1-Dec-19 – Developers of Tribune Tower East got a second chance to reassure neighbors concerned with traffic the proposed 113-story skyscraper would attract.

At a public meeting on November 19, CIM Group, based in Los Angeles, and Golub, located in Chicago, presented a revised vision for Tribune Tower East, part of a full makeover of the 94-year-old Tribune Tower. The new tower would include 125 condominium units, 439 rental units, and 200 hotel rooms.

42nd Ward Alderman Brendan Reilly says “significant changes and improvements” have been made to the building on the upper and lower levels of Michigan Avenue, Illinois Street, St. Clair Street, and North Water Street. He says that since a previous meeting last spring, developers have addressed concerns about vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Changes include new entries on the lower level for vehicles and pedestrians, pick-up and drop-off areas, two security offices that will be more visible and open around the clock, and improved lighting.

On the upper level, there is now a shortcut through the building from Illinois Street to North Water Street to drop-off hotel guests.

Pioneer Court (right), connecting Michigan Avenue and Cityfront Plaza, will be renovated with increased green space and better lighting.

Developers say the project will create 5,500 construction jobs, 400 new permanent jobs, and generate $25 million per year in real estate taxes.

The meeting at Sheraton Grand Chicago was hosted by Reilly and Streeterville Organization for Active Residents.
