1-Feb-21 – A wider path for pedestrians, runners, and cyclists over the Chicago River at Lake Shore Drive has opened.

Chicago Department of Transportation opened a 16-foot-wide sidewalk on the east side of the Lake Shore Drive Bridge on Monday. Around the bridge houses, the path narrows to eight feet but that should change by April. On the north side of the bridge, CDOT says it will find more space for the sidewalk by tunneling through the bridge house.

It is the final phase of the Navy Pier Flyover project. The Lakefront Trail is now continuous from Jane Addams Park north to Ohio Street Beach.

CDOT says it will continue making structural and mechanical repairs this year to the movable bascule bridge, which was built in 1937.
