May 1, 2025 – Jewelry and designer leather goods valued at $40,300 were taken from a condominium unit at John Hancock Center in March, according to a police report, but the thief may have been caught on the unit owner’s security cameras.
The incident happened sometime between March 16 and March 29, according to the report, while the owner was away. When the 32-year-old woman returned home, six items were missing from a box kept in a bedroom and from a bedside table drawer. They included a platinum diamond ring worth $15,000, a serpent-style bracelet worth $10,000, a three-carat platinum diamond stud worth $5,000, and a Chanel diamond brooch worth $2,500.

The woman told police on March 31 that her security cameras caught the image of someone in her apartment while she was away. That person was described as a Black male, 30-40 years old, wearing a light blue uniform with short-sleeve shirt and dark blue pants.
According to the report, the man “appeared to spot her security camera, looking straight at the camera, before the camera footage just stops filming.”
He is seen in video from a security camera unlocking the door, entering the unit, and looking directly at the camera. However, the video then ends, and the man is not seen leaving with any of the missing items.
While residents suspect a building employee who has since been fired, a spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department said on April 26 there have been no arrests.
