Summer spoiled for some by robberies and assault

August 12, 2011 – Three serious crimes were reported in July at Marina City – two robberies and an assault.

On July 21, a woman told police that nine days earlier, while she was in the 300 block of North State Street, a man cut the strap on her backpack and ran off with it. She told police she was in the middle of a crowded street at 4:30 in the afternoon and may have “had a few too many beers.”

After the robbery, the woman went to Thorek Memorial Hospital five miles north on West Irving Park Road, where she was treated for a minor cut on her back. According to the police report, she then stayed at the hospital for a “mental health evaluation” and was released on July 18.

She described the suspect as a black male, six feet four inches tall, with a light brown complexion and hazel eyes.

On July 16, a one-bedroom unit in the east tower at Marina City was robbed of $1,585 worth of mostly clothing and jewelry, along with $250 in cash, an iPhone, CTA card, and other items. The theft occurred between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m.

The next day, a verbal altercation early on a Sunday morning on the sidewalk in front of House of Blues led to an assault of a man and his motorcycle.

The unidentified victim told police that at around 4:30 a.m., he was grabbed by the throat and thrown to the ground by a white male who then kicked the man’s motorcycle to the ground. The suspect ran north on State Street. The victim refused medical attention.

The suspect, who may have been intoxicated according to the police report, was described as five feet ten inches tall, 218 pounds, with short brown hair, a fair complexion, and a scar on his chest.
