State Street under-bridge being installed

November 6, 2014 – The walkway that will get the Chicago Riverwalk under the State Street Bridge is being installed.

Photo by Steven Dahlman The 152-foot-long pre-cast concrete slab was delivered during the last week of October. It will connect the new Riverwalk with the old Riverwalk.

Meanwhile, under the Dearborn Street Bridge, a steel canopy has been installed over the walkway delivered on September 2. Crews are now installing the granite surface on which people will travel and lowering the walkway into position.

Also this week, according to Chicago Department of Transportation, workers will continue installing…

  • The concrete blocks that will make up the walls of longer passageways.
  • Wooden forms that will hold the concrete over the river wall and make walls, stair footings, and planters.
  • Other concrete forms and rebar.
  • Electrical conduits.

They will also continue getting water out of the spaces between the old and new river walls.

A construction barge and crane, that CDOT thought would be gone by now, is still west of State Street. CDOT announced last month the barge and crane would move off site during the last week of October.
