Images captured from a balcony above show a tense confrontation between protesters and police at an intersection in downtown Chicago on May 30.

4:17 p.m. (Above) Members of the Chicago Police Department’s Mounted Patrol Unit pass Hotel Palomar on State Street between Illinois Street and Grand Avenue. For the next three hours, the mood is relatively calm. Protesters are appearing periodically, walking north from the Loop along State Street. Police are arriving at various intersections, putting on riot equipment, and walking toward the Loop.

7:14 p.m. Chicago Fire Department personnel tend to a man in a stretcher at the intersection of State Street and Grand Avenue. The man had been standing and speaking with CFD personnel before being helped into the stretcher.

7:35 p.m. This may have been a good time to start to worry, as smoke from a burning police car in the Loop is seen between Kemper Building at left and Marina City at right.

7:40 p.m. Police in riot gear walk south on State Street toward the Loop.

7:41 p.m. They return with protesters. Clearly, CPD’s goal is to, as gently as possible, keep the protesters from returning to the Loop and coax them out of the downtown area. Police officers endure verbal abuse from the protesters and seem to be looking for makers of worse trouble.

7:44 p.m. A small fire is started by protesters in the intersection of State & Grand.

7:46 p.m. This attracts the Chicago Fire Department. A CFD truck carefully creeps into the intersection and a firefighter uses his boot to extinguish the fire. As the truck leaves the intersection, a calm voice on a loudspeaker says, “Stay safe, everyone.”

7:47 p.m. A crowd of protesters in the intersection of State & Grand. The man at lower right in above photo (and at left), wearing a Pittsburgh Pirates t-shirt, is seen walking throughout the intersection and often interacting aggressively with police officers.

7:48 p.m. Police wearing riot helmets have lined up and are allowing the protesters to go anywhere they wish to except south on State Street back toward the Loop. There is an uneasy tension, with protesters still verbally interacting with police and police trying to move them along.

7:49 p.m. Five police officers suddenly run toward multiple protesters east of the intersection, where cars are stopped in traffic. One of the men they are chasing is looking back at the officers, after trying to put a bike in their path, and has started to fall. The woman at lower left wearing the gray coat is getting to her feet after colliding with the officer directly in front of the red car in this photo.

Her fallen phone recovered, the woman continues on her way as the officers catch up with one of the protesters they are chasing. He is flat on Grand Avenue with his hands up.

Officers wrestle with two protesters in front of the white car as others look on. At lower right is the man in the Pirates t-shirt.

As more Chicago police officers in riot helmets catch up, an officer swings a baton at one of the men he is chasing.

At lower right, police move one of the protesters along and presumably into custody. At upper left, the man in the Pirates t-shirt appears to take an aggressive stance against two police officers.

7:50 p.m. About one minute after the incident started, police appear to have control for the moment and at least two protesters in custody. But one police officer is seen with his hand to his head as if injured. The man in the Pirates t-shirt is directly behind another officer.

One of the men police are trying to take into custody is on the ground and appears to be trying to move underneath the white car.

7:51 p.m. As the crowd again moves toward the police officers to surround them in the middle of Grand Avenue east of State Street...

Suddenly, a smoke bomb ignites.

Both police and protesters react and turn away from the smoke.

8:01 p.m. Overhead view of Chicago police officers on foot and bicycles following protesters west on Grand Avenue. Near center frame is a man on horseback. Adam Hollingsworth, “The Dreadhead Cowboy,” showed up on one of five horses he owns. He approached police officers, showed them a “No Justice No Peace” sign, and rode off as peacefully as he arrived.

8:02 p.m. Followed by Chicago police officers, protesters walk west on Grand Avenue toward Dearborn Street.

8:04 p.m. The night does end, but not before a dumpster is set on fire in the middle of Grand Avenue, closer to LaSalle Drive, and fireworks are ignited near Grand & Clark. At Grand & Dearborn, a chase breaks out, again, and two officers at upper left pursue a protester into the crowd.
