Sketch of Marina City wins Architectural Record contest

Sketch by Brian Droste

October 1, 2012 – (Above) This is the cocktail napkin sketch that won Architectural Record’s third annual cocktail napkin sketch contest. Brian Droste, age 25, a 2010 graduate of Notre Dame and intern architect at Wight & Company, an architecture and engineering firm in Chicago, won in the non-professional category.

The monthly magazine dedicated to architecture and interior design says it received nearly 1,000 napkins from more than 300 artists. According to the publication, Droste completed his sketch in about ten minutes using a fountain pen.

In its announcement of winners late last week, Architectural Record said Droste “has always been fascinated by the work of architect Bertrand Goldberg and his Marina City…in particular because of the way light bounces across the buildings, emphasizing petal-like forms.”

The winner in the professional category was Geoff Parker, an art instructor at the University of Oklahoma. (Click on above image to view larger version.)
