26-Oct-20 – The height of a proposed Gold Coast high-rise apartment building has been reduced by 129 feet.

Newcastle Limited wants to build a 29-story, 336-foot-tall tower with 299 apartments at 1130 North State Street. Last September, 2nd Ward Alderman Brian Hopkins rejected the Chicago developer’s plan for a 42-story, 465-foot building with 388 apartments.

The new design, presented to neighbors at a virtual community meeting on October 22, sets the building farther back from the street and creates an expanded outdoor plaza adjacent to an existing plaza in front of the Viceroy Hotel.

Newcastle needs a zoning variance to build the tower.

The site was formerly a Barnes & Noble bookstore. The new plan would not disturb a Lou Malnati’s pizza restaurant at 1120 North State Street.
