November 29, 2014 – One person is dead and another in critical condition after a shooting Friday night in River North.

At about 8:30 p.m., a man walked into The Shops at North Bridge on East Grand Avenue. He went to a cosmetics counter on the second floor of Nordstrom and shot a woman who Chicago Police say was his current or former girlfriend.

He then shot himself and was dead at the scene.

The woman, a seasonal employee of the fashion retailer, was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The store was full of shoppers at the time. Witnesses heard two gunshots. People screamed and ran in what one woman described as a “stampede.”

Nordstrom released a statement late Friday, saying they are working with police and the store will remain closed “until further notice.”

“Our prayers are with our employee who was involved and those who witnessed this tragic event,” said a Nordstrom spokesperson in the statement.
