— An increased presence of Cook County Sheriff’s deputies over the Independence Day weekend will continue as part of a permanent, state-funded task force to protect mass transit in Chicago.

The initial surge followed a request by 42nd Ward Alderman Brendan Reilly for additional police resources downtown after a gang-related shooting in River North killed one man and injured a bystander.

On July 1, at approximately 3:20 a.m., a gray Honda Accord pulled up to 515 North State Street along Grand Avenue. According to Reilly, five men wearing hoods and masks emerged from the vehicle armed with handguns and semi-automatic rifles. The gunmen fired into the office building’s plaza for several seconds, striking a 30-year-old man on the far side of the courtyard and a 65-year-old man near a central bench.

Witnesses reported that the rapid succession of gunfire initially sounded like holiday fireworks.

The younger man suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including two to his back and two to the back of his head. He was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The older man was struck in the foot by a stray bullet and was hospitalized in fair condition.

The gunmen fled west on Grand Avenue in the Honda, which investigators later determined was equipped with stolen license plates. The vehicle was recovered on the city’s West Side, where the suspects had set it on fire.

At the scene, investigators recovered more than 100 spent shell casings. The barrage of bullets also shattered the lobby windows of the adjacent Royal Sonesta Chicago River North hotel.

According to Reilly, the deceased target was “a gang member and convicted felon with a history of drug dealing and gun crimes in the area, as well as conflicts with rival gangs.” He had previously survived another gang-related shooting.

Police, sheriff presence to increase

Following the incident, Reilly met with 18th District Police Commander Christopher Bielfeldt to request a heightened overnight police presence downtown through the summer months, with a specific focus on the holiday weekend.

“Gun violence downtown is totally unacceptable – just as it should be unacceptable in any of Chicago’s neighborhoods,” said Reilly.

Reilly emphasized the strategic importance of protecting the city’s commercial center. “CPD’s resources are spread thin, but it is critically important we ensure the Central Business District – with its tens of thousands of tourists and tens of thousands of residents – has adequate police resources assigned to keep our downtown safe.”

Reilly stated he is working closely with 2nd Ward Alderman Brian Hopkins and 34th Ward Alderman Bill Conway to secure a more significant overnight police presence downtown this summer.

While the extra sheriff deputies were deployed to supplement Chicago police over the holiday weekend, a heavy county presence will remain at the intersection. The intersection sits directly above the Grand Red Line station, a primary focus of the sheriff’s Mass Transit Initiative.

The initiative, part of a state-funded $3.1 million pilot task force, launched on March 27. Since then, teams of approximately 50 sheriff’s officers have been working rotating 12-hour shifts targeting safety and quality-of-life issues on the CTA Red and Green lines.

According to performance data released on June 22, the daily transit patrols have resulted in 225 arrests, the apprehension of 74 wanted fugitives, and the recovery of 23 weapons.

Area 3 detectives are investigating the July 1 shooting. No suspects are currently in custody.
