Chicago’s busy State/Lake elevated station will close for demolition and a complete reconstruction – beginning on January 5, 2026 – as part of a three-year project aimed at improving accessibility and safety.

Dec. 9, 2025 – The CTA station at State & Lake will close for demolition and full reconstruction on Monday, January 5, and it will stay closed until 2029.
The elevated station, built in 1895, is being completely redesigned to meet modern accessibility standards and enhance rider safety, according to the Chicago Department of Transportation.
The revamped facility, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, will include ADA-compliant elevator access, wider platforms, updated lighting, and a glass canopy.

State/Lake is the fifth busiest station in the CTA system, serving thousands of riders daily and providing transfer to the Brown, Green, Orange, and Pink Lines.
The Red Line subway station at Lake will remain open, as well as nearby stations at Washington/Wabash and Clark/Lake.
