Mag Mile panhandler stole pricey accessories supposedly because people weren’t giving him money

July 12, 2020 – Prosecutors say a man broke into a Magnificent Mile boutique and stole expensive merchandise because people were not giving him enough money for panhandling.

Austin Kentz (left), age 18, admitted to throwing a brick through a window at MCM on Michigan Avenue on July 5 and taking a belt, backpack, and shoes worth $1,785. Witnesses saw him then get on a CTA bus. The bus was stopped by police on State Street and the merchandise was recovered.

Additional suspects were detained on the bus, but witnesses were only able to identify Kentz.
