April 13, 2010 – With the snip of five scissors, Hotel Palomar officially opened Tuesday morning. The 260-room hotel greeted its first guests on March 24 but this time they had hula-hoops.

Mayor Richard M. Daley noted the jobs the River North hotel project, two blocks from Marina City, had created and its environmentally-friendly design that “respects the past” with images depicting the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

“This represents the present and the future about where we’re going here in the City of Chicago,” said Daley, “The hospitality industry [provides] enormous business opportunities as well employment for the City of Chicago. And we’re doing everything possible to [make sure] this business stays right here.”

Cutting the ceremonial ribbon, at left, is Niki Leindakis, Chief Operating Officer of Kimpton Hotels, a San Francisco-based company that will operate the Palomar, Mike Depatie, Kimpton’s President and CEO, Dot Coyle, Director of the Chicago Office of Toursim, Mayor Daley, and Nabil Moubayed, General Manager.
