Jul. 29, 2025 – Rising demand, particularly from an aging population, is behind an estimated $1 billion expansion of Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Streeterville campus.

A new tower along Huron Street across from Feinberg Pavilion will consolidate cancer care into a single facility, enhance inpatient services, and add hundreds of new beds.

The site is the former location of Lakeside Veterans Affairs Hospital, which was demolished in 2009. Northwestern reportedly purchased 70 percent of the land in 2005 for $22 million and acquired the rest of the land in 2008.

The expansion will add five operating rooms and space for 55 to 85 physician practices. It is expected to be completed in 2031.

Northwestern says $56 million will cover design costs. A public hearing is scheduled for September 25 before the Illinois Health Facilities & Services Review Board to discuss the design application.
