July 11, 2009 – Residents and residences of Marina City are the focus of a project by a Chicago architect and a photographer whose work has appeared in world-renowned publications.

Iker Gil, an architect who lives at Marina City, is collaborating with photographer Andreas Larsson to document condominium units at the mixed-use complex. The images will eventually be used in a publication and an exhibition.

Iker Gil Iker Gil “These iconic buildings have a heterogeneous group of residents,” says Gil, “from those that have lived there since the complex first opened, to young students, renters, [and] designers. At the same time, the interior of the units reflect this heterogeneity and the change in trends, making this complex a fantastic architectural and social project.”

Gil says they are looking for residents interested in participating in the project by allowing them and their condo units to be photographed. “We are looking for any type of unit in Marina City with their owners, and not really the ones that ‘look’ good.”

He can be reached by email at iker@mas-studio.com.

An adjunct professor at University of Illinois at Chicago, Gil is also director of MAS Studio, an architecture and urban design firm. He was the curator of an exhibition last year by the Chicago Architecture Foundation on urban growth in China.

Larsson, a native of Sweden, has photographed on assignment for Chicago Magazine, The New York Times, Dwell, Harper’s Bazaar and Billboard.
