Marina City in lo-res Google Maps joke

Google Maps

April 2, 2012 – (Above) Two kids in propeller beanies aptly symbolize Marina City in this year’s April Fool’s joke from Google.

The search engine released an old-timey 8-bit version of Google Maps, offering low resolution reminiscent of the Nintendo Entertainment System. In fact, Google plans to offer “Google Maps 8-bit” as the first Nintendo cartridge in 18 years through its Google Store. On its blog, Google described the 8-bit maps as having “beautiful low-res graphics, simple and intuitive controls, and a timeless soundtrack.”

Besides searching for famous landmarks, the 8-bit version, promises Google, will allow users to “battle your way through a world of powerful monsters and mystic treasures.”
