December 14, 2014 Monday, December 15, is officially Johnny Lattner Day in Chicago, honoring the sports legend and restaurateur who turned 82 years old on October 24.
14th Ward Alderman Edward Burke sponsored the resolution, which was adopted by the Chicago City Council on November 5. A spokesperson for Burkes office said that while Lattner is in poor health, he was pleased to receive a copy of the resolution.
For the record, the resolution passed 49-0. One alderman, Anthony Beale, was absent.
Lattner scored 20 touchdowns and 120 points for Notre Dame during the 1953 season and won the Heisman trophy. After a year in the NFL, two years in the Air Force, and five years as a high school and college football coach, Lattner got into the restaurant business first at 105 West Madison Street in the Loop and then at Marina City.
Johnny Lattners Marina City opened in October 1968 and closed five years later. Lattner returned to Marina City in 2009 to visit his old restaurant, now known as Dicks Last Resort.
