Kimmel back in Chicago

August 4, 2010 – 17 months after arriving at a minimum-security prison to serve a 37-month sentence for money laundering, Gary Kimmel has returned to Chicago. He is at a community corrections center, or what is commonly known as a “half-way house.”

Gary S. Kimmel The release date for Kimmel (left), now 61 years old, is December 5, 2010.

His attorney, Joseph Lopez, confirmed Kimmel’s new residence. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a “residential reentry center” is a privately operated facility that provides assistance to inmates who are nearing release. RRC staff monitor each inmate 24 hours a day. Inmates are expected to be employed full-time within 15 days of arrival and must pay the center 25 percent of their gross income.

According to the Bureau of Prisons, Kimmel is at a Salvation Army location on the Near West Side. It is not known exactly when he arrived.

In November 2009, Lopez told Marina City Online that Kimmel wants to resume his career as a dentist. He must first pay a $50,000 fine to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to get his dentist license back.

Kimmel qualified for early release mostly by completing a drug and alcohol counseling program.
