Kemper Building sold but Kemper Corp will stay

Photo by Steven Dahlman July 17, 2013 – Although the 41-story Kemper Building on the north side of the Loop is being sold, Kemper Corporation will remain at 1 East Wacker Drive along with their new signs that were installed last year.

Kemper expects to close on the sale by the end of September. The buyer is AmTrust Realty Corporation, a commercial real estate company based in New York, which purchased the Kemper Building for an undisclosed amount.

“Along with this agreement, Kemper will remain as a tenant in the building with a long-term lease arrangement and retain naming and signage rights for the building,” said John Boschelli, Kemper’s Vice President and Chief Investment Officer, in a statement released by Kemper on Wednesday.

Built in 1962, the steel and marble building started out as the United Insurance Building. The name was changed to Unitrin in 2000. On April 22, 2012, eight months after Unitrin changed its name to Kemper, new signs were installed by helicopter near the top of the building on the north and south sides.
