July dates in Marina City history

July 7, 1960 – The Federal Housing Administration approves mortgage insurance, payable in case of default, in the amount of $17,819,100 to the Building Service Employees International Union for the construction of Marina City.

July 13, 1962 – The first mention of Marina City by a society editor. Eleanor Page Voysey writes in the Chicago Daily Tribune about John T. Beatty and his wife, Mrs. John T. Beatty, who will soon move to an apartment at Marina City.

July 1964 – Marina City Garage & Parking Corporation announces a deal with Hertz to offer rental cars, with just 15 minute notice, to Marina City residents.

July 10, 1964 – Marina Management Corporation, led by Charles Swibel, purchases from the international union and two affiliates full control of Marina City for $2,625,000.

July 8, 1980 – A class-action lawsuit is filed in federal court suggesting that a city council ordinance, supported by 10th Ward Alderman Edward Vrdolyak, allowed Charles Swibel to make large profits by selling 50 condo units at Marina City to Vrdolyak at “bargain basement” prices.

July 2, 2007 – The sign above the main entrance to Hotel Sax is installed.
