Marina City ‘perspective’ drawing on display at New York gallery

September 13, 2011 – A drawing, made in 2008 from Marina City that was at The Field Museum in 2009, is now on display at a gallery in Chelsea, a neighborhood on the west side of Manhattan.

Using a special curved easel to create a realistic panoramic rendering, the drawing was created from a balcony on the 29th floor of the east tower at Marina City. Twin brothers Trevor and Ryan Oakes invented the drawing method in 2004. The curator of the Chelsea exhibit, Lawrence Weschler, calls it “one of the most significant breakthroughs in the depiction of visual space since the Renaissance.”

Along with 39 other examples of their work, the drawing is on display until October 29 at CUE Art Foundation, a non-profit arts organization. An opening reception was held on Saturday.

Born in Colorado, Ryan and Trevor graduated from Cooper Union’s School of Art in New York in 2004. A drawing of Millennium Park’s Cloud Gate is on display in Terminal 2 at O’Hare International Airport.
