February 8, 2016 – A man was run over by a taxi and killed early Sunday after he got into a fight in River North.

Marques Gaines, age 32, was from the 1400 block of West Chicago Avenue, northwest of the Loop, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Gaines was involved in a fight with another man at about 4:20 a.m. near North State Street and West Hubbard Street. Witnesses say he was punched in the head, fell into the street, and while lying in the street, was hit by a taxi.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead about four hours later.

The taxi driver stopped. He says he did not see Gaines in the street. The man who punched Gaines left the area and as of Monday had not been found.
