October 31, 2013 – Chicago’s four-month-old fleet of shared bicycles will continue rolling through the winter. Chicago Department of Transportation announced on Tuesday the company that operates the system for CDOT would clear snow and ice from the Divvy bike stations. In extreme weather, however, Chicago Bike Share will have the option of temporarily closing stations.

There are now 300 Divvy stations in Chicago, including ten in River North. Another 100 will be added citywide next year.

“We’re committed to serving Divvy riders year-round, even during our snowy Chicago winters,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel in a news release. “Divvy bikes will be available to ride throughout the fall and winter seasons, so Chicagoans can bundle up and keep warm by pedaling to their destinations.”

The city says it has 11,000 annual members who each pay $75 per year. Bicycles can also be rented for the day for seven dollars.

Chicago Bike Share is owned by Alta Bicycle Share, a company based in Portland, Oregon. Its teams circulate through Chicago neighborhoods in blue vans every day from 6 a.m. to midnight.
