August 31, 2020 With the pandemic probably not ending anytime soon, what outdoor dining will look like this winter in Chicago is anyones guess.
The City of Chicago wants to see ideas and has launched a design competition to reimagine the winter outdoor dining experience with COVID-19 safety protocols.
The Winter Design Challenge has three categories outdoor, standalone structures; indoor spaces; and cultural shifts making winter dining more appealing.

Our restaurants and bars are the heart and soul of the city, and we must do everything possible to keep them operational during the harsh winter months, said Sam Toia (left), President/CEO of Illinois Restaurant Association, a partner with the city in the design competition. |
We need out-of-the-box thinking to address the hardship facing our industry. The Winter Design Challenge demonstrates the citys support of innovation in these trying times, and we look forward to ideas that are both creative and operationally attainable for our members, said Toia
Deadline for entries is September 7. A panel of local restaurant workers and community members will select one winner in each category. Winners, announced in mid-September, will each receive $5,000 and the opportunity to implement their idea.
