5-Sep-21 Eighteen months after the previous staff changes, Chicago Police Department has announced a new commander of the Near North police district.
Jon Hein is 50 years old and has been with CPD for 25 years, most recently as Executive Officer of the 15th police district based in the Austin community. Before that, he was a lieutenant for the 24th district in Rogers Park. He was the business liaison sergeant for the 9th district in Deering and a Tactical Team sergeant in the 1st district based in the Loop.
He has a bachelors degree in Criminal Justice from Southern Illinois University.
The 18th police district stretches from the main branch of the Chicago River north to Fullerton Avenue, and from Lake Michigan to the north branch of the river.
Hein replaces Jill Stevens, who is now Deputy Chief of Area 3. Daniel OShea, who before Stevens had also been promoted from 18th district commander to Deputy Chief of Area 3, is now Deputy Chief of the Criminal Networks Group.
Superintendent David Brown announced the promotions on September 1. He says the changes follow recent retirements within the departments executive ranks.
These leaders represent the highest levels of professionalism and commitment, and I am excited about the paths they will forge in their new positions, said Brown. I have the utmost confidence in them as they continue working to make Chicago a safer city.
