May 13, 2025 – A memorandum signed by President Donald Trump aims at controlling invasive carp in the Great Lakes. The memorandum, signed on May 9, aligns with Illinois’ backing of the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, which focuses on enhancing dam barriers to prevent the invasive fish from using the Chicago Area Waterway System – which includes the Chicago River – to enter the Great Lakes. The spread of Asian carp poses a considerable threat to the region’s ecosystems and economic interests. On April 30, Greg VanWoerkom introduced a resolution in the Michigan House of Representatives urging Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker to expedite the project, which was previously delayed due to federal funding concerns. The fight against invasive species in Lake Michigan has gained urgency as Trump has emphasized the need for immediate action to safeguard the Great Lakes. |
