Loop carjacker goes four blocks before being caught

December 23, 2015 – Two people were injured but the suspect is in jail after a carjacking in the northwest corner of the Loop on Tuesday.

Dimitrious Johnson Chicago police arrested Dimitrious Johnson (left), age 38, of the South Austin neighborhood west of the Loop. He is charged with one count of vehicular hijacking and two counts of battery.

At about 8 p.m., a 30-year-old man was sitting in the driver seat of his car, parked in the 200 block of West Lake Street when Johnson, according to police, opened the door and forced the man to the passenger seat. Police say Johnson then punched the man in the face and body, pulled him from the car, and threw him to the ground.

Johnson then drove off in the car, running over the foot of a 24-year-old woman.

He did not get far. Police spotted Johnson, in the stolen vehicle, four blocks east on State Street. He was taken into custody and positively identified by the victims.

The man and woman injured by the carjacker were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and were in stable condition.
