29-Jan-18 – Red Light Cameras installed along Michigan Avenue will improve safety, says 42nd Ward Alderman Brendan Reilly.

The automated cameras were activated on January 22, catching motorists running red lights at Michigan & Ontario Street and Michigan & Jackson Boulevard, but violations will not be issued until February 5.

Reilly says feedback from residents about safety led to installation of the cameras.

The intersections were chosen based on traffic – vehicles and pedestrians – and number of accidents.

Starting February 5, failure to stop at a red light at the intersections will result in a $100 fine.

Red Light Cameras have been in Chicago since 2003 but since 2011, the number of cameras has dropped 20 percent. Last March, a study by Northwestern University recommended that a small number of existing cameras be relocated.
