4-Jan-20 – Eliminating fatalities and serious injuries from traffic crashes is the goal of a project that has installed left-turn “calming treatments” at five intersections along State Street.

The treatments, between Kinzie Street and Ontario Street, include speed bumps and vertical posts. The stretch along State Street is considered a “high crash corridor.”

(Left) Posts at State & Illinois claim more space for pedestrians.

According to 42nd Ward Alderman Brendan Reilly, the posts make the centerline of an intersection easier for drivers to see and guide drivers to take a safer, slower path while turning left. Reilly says they will also make pedestrians who are crossing the street more visible to drivers.

The city is also using road diets that reduce the number or width of vehicle lanes, reallocating the space for bicycle lanes, pedestrian crossing islands, left turn lanes, or parking.

The project is meant to be a quick, low-cost, and temporary solution that can be adjusted based on results and community feedback. It was developed by the Vision Zero Downtown task force chaired by Reilly.
