‘Architecture Biennial’ hopes to bring architecture world to Loop

June 25, 2014 – The largest planet-wide survey of architecture in North America could be based in the Loop starting next year.

River North’s Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts announced on Tuesday it will work with the city to present the first ever “Chicago Architecture Biennial.”

“The event will include robust public programming and exhibitions featuring the world’s leading architectural talent,” said the foundation in a news release.

Thousands of architects, students, and others with a serious interest in architecture could be visiting Chicago to see large exhibitions at the Cultural Center, Millennium Park, and locations around the city. The exhibitions would feature the work of both established and emerging architects.

Sarah Herda “Together with the City of Chicago, we will create a significant international forum for the exploration of new ideas in architecture,” said Sarah Herda (left), director of Graham Foundation and co-artistic director of the project. “The biennial will place Chicago, once again, at the forefront of the architectural imagination.”

The first biennial will run from October 1, 2015, through January 3, 2016. The event will be privately funded. The oil and gas company BP has promised $2.5 million to be the presenting sponsor.
