Seven-hour ‘mariachi extravaganza’ planned for Millennium Park

12-Jun-17 – Seven hours of mariachi bands will be more than just a dream when the Chicago Mariachi Festival starts next week.

The festival will include a seven-hour “mariachi extravaganza” at Millennium Park on June 25. The free event will take place at Cloud Gate and Jay Pritzker Pavilion starting at 2 p.m.

Featured bands will include Mariachi Herencia de México from Chicago and student mariachi bands from seven Chicago Public Schools.

On June 24, Ballet Folklórico de la Universidad de Colima will perform at Roosevelt University’s Auditorium Theatre. Tickets for that event will range from $40 to $75.

This will be the festival’s third year in Chicago and organizers say it is the largest mariachi event in the United States, attracting more than 18,000 people.

Music Inspired by Korean Poetry – Sijo Poems in Settings from Classical to Hip-Hop. The sijo is a traditional Korean poetic form typically exploring cosmological, metaphysical, or pastoral themes. This performance explores music inspired by sijo through jazz piano, piano/violin, and cello/flute duos, and a hip-hop performance by Elephant Rebellion. 4:00 p.m., Poetry Foundation, 61 West Superior Street. Susan G. Komen Chicago’s Ignite the Fight Gala, celebrating 20 years of funding global research and providing critical breast health services for the underserved in the Chicago area. The anniversary celebration will feature Mario Lopez, Emmy-winning host of Extra, as the Celebrity More than Pink Ambassador, as well as 20 More Than Pink Heroes, who will be honored for their exceptional compassion, bravery, and leadership in the fight against breast cancer.

The Gala will kick off with the Dearborn Street and Clark Street bridges over the Chicago River being illuminated in pink. The bridge lighting takes place at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner, awards and dancing at Westin Chicago River North, 320 North Dearborn Street. Pink ties and pink cocktail attire encouraged. Tickets are now on sale.

Halloween Parade of Artists, celebrating Chicago’s Creative Spirits. Arts in the Dark unites the city’s diverse creative community in a magical nighttime parade. This family-friendly spectacle will begin as dusk arrives and will include live music, unique floats, and fanciful giant puppets. 6:00-8:00 p.m., Columbus Drive from Balbo north to Monroe.
