Suspect charged in death of River North bartender

4-Feb-17 – Aggravated battery is the charge handed down to the man accused in the death last year of Marques Gaines, a popular Mag Mile bartender who was punched outside a 7-Eleven in River North, then run over accidentally by a taxi.

Hennepin County Sherriff’s Office Marcus Moore (left), age 32, was charged Friday in the incident last February at State & Hubbard. Bail was set at $50,000 and he will be back in court next Wednesday. He was arrested on January 23 in Minneapolis.

Court records show Moore has been arrested numerous times before for minor offenses such as possession of marijuana, obstruction of traffic, criminal trespass to land, gambling, and panhandling. But on January 3, Circuit Court Judge Eulalia De La Rosa ruled probable cause to detain Moore for aggravated battery.

Gaines (right), also 32 years old, was a bartender at Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile. After his shift ended late on February 7, 2016, he went to Mother Hubbard’s Sports Bar on West Hubbard Street, then next door to the 7-Eleven. After leaving the convenience store, he was struck in the back of the head and knocked unconscious by a man seen in surveillance video arguing with Gaines and a store security guard. Marques Gaines

Gaines was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital but died four hours later of multiple blunt force injuries. The death was ruled a homicide by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
