29-May-16 – The marquee outside the Goodman Theatre in the Loop has 42 percent fewer letters after an electrical fire early Saturday morning.

The fire started at about 5 a.m. It damaged the 56-foot-tall sign near Dearborn & Lake but did not spread into the building, which was unoccupied at the time. There were no injuries and Chicago Fire Department had the fire out by 5:30 a.m.

Three performances on Saturday and three on Sunday went on as scheduled.

“While this is an unfortunate event, we consider ourselves lucky that nobody was injured, and are grateful to the Chicago Fire Department for their swift response,” said Roche Schulfer, executive director of Goodman Theatre.

The marquee has been outside the building since the Goodman moved there in 2000. Illuminated from within, the sign features four-foot-tall brushed stainless steel letters that spell out Goodman.
