Audio tour added to CAF ‘Model City’ exhibition

Tour ‘explores the stories behind the planning of Chicago’

20-Jan-10 – It wasn’t enough for the Chicago Architecture Foundation to recreate all of downtown Chicago in the atrium of the Santa Fe Building. Now they have added a collection of audio tours.

The 25 x 35-foot scale model, said to be popular with residents and tourists, has been on display since June 2009. Last November, the exhibition was extended to November 2010.

Recorded by urban planners, architects, historians, and CAF docents, the 50-minute audio tour consists of 23 different tracks that coordinate with stopping points along the exhibit. Topics include the making of the model, neighborhoods near downtown, and how Chicago streets got their names.

Listening devices can be rented for $5 ($3 for members) from the shop at the non-profit CAF in the Santa Fe Building on South Michigan Avenue. The audio tracks can also be downloaded for free from iTunes. Here are a few that caught our ear…
