Arrest in River North hit-and-run

Kyle Hawkins 26-Nov-16 – A 26-year-old man from the Broadview neighborhood west of the Loop has turned himself in as the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run a week ago in River North.

Kyle Hawkins (left) was charged with one felony count of failure to report an accident resulting in death. He was in bond court on Friday.

The accident happened on November 20 at about 4:01 a.m. near the intersection of North LaSalle Street and West Chicago Avenue. Hawkins says he was driving the white Jeep SUV that struck 23-year-old Phillip Levato in a crosswalk. Levato, from the Bridgeport neighborhood southwest of the Loop, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital but pronounced dead at 4:35 a.m.

The Jeep SUV fled south on LaSalle Street but police had its make, model, color, and license plate number.

Hawkins walked into the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Investigation Unit on South State Street on Wednesday afternoon. Police say he was placed into custody without incident.
