About Loop North

Loop North is a news and information website serving the Loop and Near North neighborhoods of downtown Chicago – particularly River North and Streeterville. If you live and/or work north of Adams Street, south of Chicago Avenue, east of the Chicago River, and west of Lake Michigan, this website is for you. In terms of zip codes, we serve 60601 (north side of Loop), 60603 (central Loop), 60606 (west side of Loop), 60611 (northeast of Loop), and 60654 (northwest of Loop).

News. Our reporters and writers each have decades of professional experience. We cover news of interest to people who live and/or work in downtown Chicago, particularly subjects that are under-served by other news outlets.

Building permits. Search thousands of records by selecting a specific street address, specific building, or by clicking on a location on a map. Get permit number, type (e.g., renovation/alteration), location (street address and building name), description, estimated cost, permit fee, and date issued. For each contractor – name, type (e.g., architect), address, telephone number. Or see displayed on a map building permits issued in the past year for projects with the highest estimated cost. Permit data updated daily from Department of Buildings.
Business licenses. Summaries of licenses recently issued by the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection for locations in the 42nd Ward. License number, legal name, DBA name, location (with link to address displayed on map), description, date issued, expiration date, and current license status. Select a specific business by its street address. Or click to see just licenses issued to new restaurants and bars. Updated daily.

Downtown Chicago Crime Report Downtown Chicago Crime Report provides access to Chicago Police Department crime incident reports for the Loop and five other neighborhoods – Fulton River District, Gold Coast, New East Side, River North, and Streeterville.

At a glance, see what crimes have been reported most recently, where and when they happened, whether there was an arrest, and case numbers. Search by block, date, or crime. Click Neighborhood to widen the search by a few blocks. Click the Trend button for an analysis of the selected crime on the selected block – number of incidents reported, percentage of incidents in which there was an arrest, and locations at which the crime was reported the most. Click Analyze Block to see how the selected block compares with the rest of downtown Chicago.

Divvy bicycle stations. Location and current number of bicycles available at Divvy stations in downtown Chicago. Updated every 10 minutes from data obtained from divvybikes.com.

Filming locations in Chicago. Active permits only, updated daily. See the project name and description, permit number and date issued, location address and dates project will be shooting there, and street closings (if any). Scroll through a list or see locations displayed on a map.

Real estate transfers. See at a glance where condo units have sold downtown – north of Adams Street and south of Chicago Avenue – in the past three months. Get price, date sold, seller, and buyer. See all sales at a specific location – either click on a map or select from drop-down lists.

Restaurant Health Inspections Restaurant health inspections. Put down that noodle until you’ve checked out the restaurant’s health inspection results on Loop North.

See at a glance where the most recent inspections took place, including restaurants that failed their inspection. Scroll through recent inspections, recent failed inspections, or select from more than 1,000 restaurants currently in our database. Get the restaurant name, address (with link to Google Maps), inspection type, result, and date. Data is refreshed daily from the City of Chicago’s Department of Public Health.

River North Happy Hours. The most complete, up-to-date list of bars and restaurants in River North that observe the Happy Hour tradition.

Every afternoon, a summary of news and information of particular interest to Chicagoans who live and/or work in downtown Chicago is created and emailed at no charge to subscribers. This update includes headlines and links to stories from Loop North News, closing stock prices of companies with headquarters in the Loop and on the north side, a tip on an upcoming neighborhood event, and the weather forecast for downtown Chicago for the rest of the day and tomorrow.

Once a week, an update is emailed to a large list of people local and nationwide, providing a summary of stories covered during the previous week.
